The word tense came from the Latin tempus , time. The verb that refers to present time is said to be in present tense.A verb that refers to past time is sad to be in past tense.A verb that refers to future time is said to be in the future tense.Present , past and future are the three main tenses in English.The tense of the verb shows the time of an action or event.

The simple past tense is used to indicate an action completed in the past It often occurs with adverbs or adverb phrases of past time. We use simple past tense to talk about an action , situation or event that happened in the past.

The simple past tense tells us :

  • What a person or thing did
  • What a person or thing was
  • What a person or thing owned

We add –d or –ed to regular verbs to form simple past tense. Irregular verbs take different forms. Some verbs do not change to form the simple past tense.

The verbs ‘to be ‘ in the simple past tense are : was and were

The verb ‘to have’ form of the simple past tense is : had
