It is used to describe an activity or situation that began before the time we are talking about in the past. It has the structure 

Subject + had + been + ing form of the main verb + object


To make the negative of the past perfect continuous we add not or  n't to had .
To make questions in the past perfect continuous, we put had before the subject.
