The word tense came from the Latin tempus , time. The verb that refers to the present time is said to be in the present tense. A verb that refers to past time is sad to be in the past tense. A verb that refers to future time is said to be in the future tense. Present, past, and future are the three main tenses in English. The tense of the verb shows the time of an action or event.
The past perfect tense describes an action completed before a certain moment in the past. If two actions happened in the past, the past perfect tense is used to show which action happened earlier than the other.
